Refine Your Digital Marketing Efforts by Watching Porn [Data]

Like it or not (I know you like it), adult entertainment has long been one of the most popular topics on the web. Whatever industry you are in, I am certain that the porn industry is bigger. It’s been around on the web since the beginning and hasn’t slowed down. In this blog post, I won’t dive into why that is nor do I really care. The bottom line is that the porn industry sets a lot of standards for digital marketing and consumer habits.

Pornography has always been a pioneering industry online, pushing internet technology, business models, and usage forward more than is often acknowledged.

One of the biggest changes that I’ve not only predicted for 2014, but have been talking about for years is the mobile shift. Many experts (like myself, hello) are predicting that mobile usage will surpass desktop usage by the end of 2014. If you look at your website’s analytics right now, depending on your industry, you’re probably still seeing 15-30% of your total web visitors coming in from a mobile device.

But if you take a look at the pornography industry, specifically new data from video porn website Pornhub, mobile usage has already become the leader – about a year earlier than anyone else. About 52% of porn consumption was on mobile phones this year, compared to 46% last year. By the way, Pornhub had about 15 Billion views this year to their website, so I consider this data to be pretty solid. That’s 1.68 Million visits per hour. See what I mean about watching this industry’s trends?

It’s like consumer behavior and media consumption habits are always one step ahead in this industry.

Privacy and portability are two obvious reasons for the mobile shift. But more broadly, usage of everything digital is moving from desktops and laptops to tablets and smartphones.

There are some other interesting statics on their Insights page. The most active day in 2012 and 2013 was Mondays. The least active was Saturday in 2012 and Thursday in 2013. What does this mean for someone in the cupcake biz? I don’t know for sure. But perhaps there is something we can learn from this data. Check out my previous post about Social Media where a diagram shows Twitter engagement taking a dip on Thursdays. What is it with Thursdays?!

I think these are important trends to watch and as weird as it sounds, keeping an eye on the porn industry can give us a good idea of what’s ahead in our own.
